Sometimes when the effects of the sedatives wear off and you do wake up your eyes will be covered by cold compress gauze dressing, do not be alarmed if you cannot see just call our for a nurse, there will always be a team in place to assist you.
Again depending on the type of surgery preformed you might be admitted overnight, in some cases the surgeon may feel confident in allowing you to go home under the care of a loved one. Your vision will almost always be blurry for a few days after a surgery, in part due to the medicine used on your eyes and also some normal eyelid swelling. It’s always recommended to wear the dark sunglasses provided to keep your eyes covered. It’s very important to avoid bright lights and bright sunlight to avoid any kind of irritation. If you do have any pain we are able to manage and reduce the discomfort with medications we prescribe however, it’s of the utmost importance to continue icing throughout the first few days after surgery. Icing serves two main purposes: firstly, it helps control and manage pain levels and secondly, it helps immensely in reducing swelling at an appropriate rate. It’s also highly essential that you keep the area around your eye clean, you can clean crust from your eye lashes by pouring warm water on a q-tip and brushing away the crusts very carefully. After removing the crusts you may be able to open your eyes however, if the eyelids do not open do not force it or scrub at the sutures.
Another common question that is sometimes asked is what is the best position to sleep in after surgery. After eye surgery it’s very important not to sleep face down or on your side. Sleeping on your back with the head elevated on a pillow or something similar would be the most ideal until all sutures are removed.
After your surgery is completed and your patch is removed you will be given eye drops. Please follow the instructions from the doctor as to how you must apply the drops.
